Futurismo
KONK
Eighties band KONK dealt in everything from punchy post-punk to jazz, hip-hop, disco, and Latin, when playing New York City clubs like CBGBs. This new wave approach made them favourites of the scene, something close to an early version of LCD Soundsystem. This 24-track, triple vinyl pack, lovingly compiled by the Futurismo label, is a testament to the breadth and depth of their work. The compilation includes live versions and studio recordings of many of their best songs, which lean heavily on sampled-rich percussive tracks, but they’re always tied together and driven forwards by strong, funky basslines. There are jazz-funk riffs to die for on ‘Elephant,’ big doses of dub disco swagger on ‘Love Attack’, and there’s some brilliant bongo playing on ‘Baby Dee.’ Listening now, it’s clear that KONK haven’t got the props they deserve – until now.
