In this series, Selections, we invite DJs, producers and label heads to dig into their digital crates and share the contents of their Bandcamp collections. While hearing new music played out by your favourite selectors has been put on hold as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s never been easier, or more important, to support the artists and imprints releasing tracks, albums, EPs and comps in the midst of all the madness. In lieu of opportunities to discover new records on the dancefloor, Selections will give you the chance to nab sounds from the crates of tastemakers, and support the people behind them while you’re at it. Win-win, right?
This week, Dobbs highlights some of her recent favourites, spanning hyperactive edits, bootleg belters and melon-twisting experiments from all corners of the club music spectrum. Catch a set by the London DJ and you’ll be scrambling for rewinds and track IDs in equal measure. The brains behind the Witchezz Brew radio show on Reprezent, she’s become a stalwart of the highly respected station. (You can check out our mini-documentary about Reprezent here). She has spotlighted exciting artists from around the world — such as Noudle, Anna Morgan, Jaymie Silk and DJ Sideswipe in 2020 alone — on her show, and uses her position to highlight issues facing women and members of the LGBTQI+ community within dance music and beyond.
Dobbs is part of UK supergroup 6 Figure Gang, performing alongside Yazzus, Jossy Mitsu, FAUZIA, LCY and SHERELLE on the outfit’s sold-out UK tour with Boiler Room in 2019. To kick off 2021, she opens her Bandcamp record bag, giving us 10 fewer IDs to worry about. Check out Dobbs’ Selections below.
“I really love UNIIQU3 and KG as amazing producers in their own rights — UNIIQU3 being a pioneer of Jersey club and KG with her blend of funky house, bass and Afro influences — but putting them together makes a dream team and makes me super- excited to play this when the clubs open back up. Also, shoutout to Future Bounce for releasing this and being so consistent with the amazing releases!”
“I’ve had my eyes on DJ MELL G throughout 2020 — and the entire Childsplay label — and this release did not disappoint. I’ve been playing ‘ACTIV8’ in a few of my radio shows and mixes and I think it’s the perfect track to get lost in and think of the rave that awaits us.”
“I’m a huge fan of remixes and edits, and I’ve been a fan of Usher Lavelle’s work for some time now. I think he’s really grown as a producer, and this remix proves it. In a year where disco is all around us in the mainstream (looking at you, Dua Lipa), I think Usher took his time with this remix and completely made it something new and exciting. JUST LISTEN TO THOSE SYNTHS!!!”
“I’m so excited for CELIIINE. This was the perfect introduction into what they are making and I’m super-excited to hear what’s next. The blend of old school hip-hop production with heavier bassier elements makes this such a treat. ‘Scribbles’ is definitely a highlight for me, with the delicate piano playing with that sparse bassline.”
“The way Roo Honeychild blends classical, operatic singing with huge Jersey club chops is a total win for me. This track has had me in my room, in front of the mirror, practising my booty shake for when the clubs are open. It’s such a fun track that is so excellently produced, defo check out more of Roo Honeychild’s catalogue on Bandcamp!”
“I’m a huge fan of Jaymie Silk and have been since 2017. I’ve been so impressed with his production and artistry. I’m really excited for his next release via Shall Not Fade called ‘The Legend Of Jack Johnson’, which — if the title track is anything to go by — will see Jaymie continue to bring up important conversations about racism and expand not only as the brilliant producer he is, but as an all-round artist and storyteller.”
“Bored Lord quickly became one of my favourite producers throughout 2020, and without a shadow of a doubt, their edit pack ‘Never Been To London’ is probably one of my favourite edit packs of last year. It’s a love letter to UKG and a particular highlight is ‘And The DJ Keeps It Sincere’, which I think I reloaded about five times when I first listened to it.”
“I think everyone in the London electronic music scene needs to give A.G her flowers. She has been so consistent in 2020 with the stellar releases, and ‘Lychee’ is the perfect emotional garage track. Even the artwork for this is perfect cuteness! Another track I cannot wait to be spinning in the clubs.”
“I’m a huge fan of what Bare Recordings has done with this incredible compilation. Bringing together some of India’s hottest producers, such as Oceantied, Yung.Raj, Potter and chrms, as well as some of the hottest talent from across the globe, such as Polo Lilli, Etch and Ray Monero. This compilation is fantastic in showing how club can be psychedelic, and it just flows as a body of work. I’m really excited to hear more from each artist.”
“Devoye is a rising star from New York who manages to make the sexiest club music that you can dance to. I’ve been a fan since 2019 and this latest edit pack that he has released has brought me so much joy during lockdown, with ‘Uptown Jazz (Jaedons Saxy Mix)’ being a highlight for me. It just makes everything in the world seem a little bit better.”
