Space Opening Party

The Space opening party for Ibiza 2005 rocked, despite the old terrace resembling a building site. Here's photos and a review.

Most seasoned clubbers share fond common memories of Ibiza's Space.
Particularly of joining the screaming throng, arms aloft, on the world famous terrace.

But for those attending this year's Opening Party on June 5th, the memories of the place are slightly more unusual.

As ever, the annual party drew thousands of devotees to celebrate the return of music and madness to the venue for another epic morning/evening/night season, but work to put a permanent glass roof over the terrace was far from complete in time for the fiesta.

It was as if Erick Morillo had dropped one too many incendiary house bombs during his closing set in October.

The legendary outdoor dancefloor was little more than rubble and scaffolding.

But, Space being Space, a few tardy construction issues weren't going to be allowed to spoil the party.

Even so, the club's response was pretty outstanding.

New Terrace

A new, strikingly familiar and many felt, better, version of the terrace had been built, on the opposite side of the indoor Discoteca.

The look and feel of the place is uncannily like the now obliterated old terrace, the usual array of residents including Smokin Jo, Jon Ulysses and Tom Novy provided the same musical flavour, and the wildly responsive crowd completed the replica package.

It remains to be seen how this area will actually operate when the club is regularly in full swing, but for devotees of al fresco dancing, Space remains the place.

When finished, the glass roof will allow dancing all night long back on the old terrace.

So it looks like, in bowing to noise restrictions, the club has in fact further cemented itself as a world-beating venue well into the future.

Of course, DJmag was back for the third year presenting the 'Car Park Arena' that springs up behind the club just for opening and closing parties.

Over 2,500 happy people were rocking in the sunshine out there alone.

Highlights included sets from regulars John Taylor and Villeneuve, (who lead the crowd on an impassioned singalong from the DJ console), plus the Glimmer Twins and Eric Prydz appearing for the first time, and Carl Cox playing a fantastic house set.
